A Little Outdoor Garden Lighting Design
Outdoor garden lighting can make an astonishing amount of difference to the look of your property after dark.
Of course it is tempting sometimes to think of outdoor garden lighting as just a purely functional thing – a way for us to avoid tripping up if we have to go out late at night, but there is a charm to seeing a place lit well after dark that most of us are still facinated by.
Think back to famous places you’ve visited, where you saw the location both in the day time and by night (or maybe bought the postcard!). The night-time image is invariably more dramatic – even for places like the Trevi fountain in Rome which is dramatic enough even in daylight!
Now, there is no suggestion that you should try to light your house in the same way as an ancient monument. However, simple accenting of some of the features of your property can make a huge difference in how it looks.
Using Outdoor Garden Lighting for Dramatic Effect
Don’t be tempted to just bathe the whole property in light. Pick out small areas or features for the most dramatic effect.
So, for example, do you have a large or unusually-shaped tree? Perhaps uplighting would bring out the strength or shape. Maybe you have an area of planting that becomes a single blob in the darkness? Simple highlighting will bring back the color and shape to your plants. Statues are an obvious target for some illumination after dark, but stay with a more subtle approach to achieve the best effect.
When you have thought through all of the highlight areas in your garden, you should also have a think about how people will get around it in the dark. Using a different kind of outdoor garden lighting kit, you can set up path lighting to guide them along any paths you have and in a similar way, you may want to set up more general lights to provide illumination around a pool or patio.
