The Kichler 15861 is one of the mainstays of the Design Pro LED series, providing a controllable wash of light wherever needed.

The Kichler 15861 from the Design Pro series is an LED Wall Wash. It is designed to create an even light spread at fairly low intensity to illuminate shrubs, wall surfaces and plants.

The best thing about the Design Pro series from Kichler is that they won’t force you into a design compromise just because you are using LED lighting. They have a particularly high efficiency as far as their energy output is concerned and use something like 80% less power than an equivalent halogen bulb.

The LED elements in the 15861 have an extremely long lifetime (of the order of around 40,000 hours) and as a result, are extrememly cost-effective when combined with their low energy use as already discussed. This adds up to long-term savings for customers.

The design of LEDs used by Kichler in the 15861 is adjusted to give a warm, white light that gives a pleasing lighting color to your exterior landscape and the other elements are designed for optimum spread and output exactly where it is needed in the surrounding area. The actual color temperature of the 15861 fittings is around 2,800K which sits centrally in the range of 2,600-3,100K for normal incandescent lighting.

The color of light is referred to as its temperature and is measured in degrees Kelvin (K). The color temperature of most incandescent light ranges from 2600 to 3100 K. At a temperature of approximately 2800K, Kichler LED Landscape Accent Lights showcase landscape features with true, clear, white light without intruding on the scene.

Finally, the 15861 can be mounted both on the ground, using a surface mounting flange, or on a vertical surface using a tree mounting bracket to give it complete flexibility for positioning.

Find out how Kichler Outdoor Lighting can help with your landscape lighting problems.

Kichler Outdoor Lighting Exposed

Kichler outdoor lighting solutions have grown out of the expertise that Kichler have gained in other areas of house lighting over the years. Like most manufacturers, lights in this range started out as standard 120V solutions and there are still some of these earlier kits in the Kichler range.

More recently, Kichler have moved to almost exclusively LED landscape lighting, as these have grown in light output and dropped in cost. The real benefit of this approach is the ability to drop to using a 12 volt power supply and the cost savings when you adopt this approach are significant for very little difference in light output.

Painting Light with Kichler Outdoor Lighting

As a DIY job, installing Kichler outdoor lighting needs you to be as much of an artist as an engineer and so is quite different to most home improvement tasks. As you lay out your ideas for the lights, try to think which parts of the house or garden would look good with a large wash of light and then pick out much smaller areas with spotlights to provide some contrast and focal points for the eye.

Using outdoor wall lights from the Kichler outdoor lighting range and possibly an outdoor post light or two gives another way to illuminate small areas but can also be the best way to make paths and steps safe after dark. Kichler outdoor lighting kits cover all of these individual solutions so that there is a way to handle almost every situation.

By using the ideas presented here and in other parts of the site it will be possible for you to have your own Kichler Outdoor Lighting setup working quickly and smoothly and for you to significantly boot the value of your property in the process.

Outdoor wall lighting needs to cope with many different circumstances. Find out what Kichler can provide to help.

Outdoor Wall Lighting from Kichler

Outdoor wall lighting can take many forms. The wall wash approach has already been covered in our article on Kichler outdoor wall lighting but there are two other forms of wall lighting that you may find useful in different circumstances.

Spotlights and floodlights.

The first is the traditional spotlight or floodlight. These can obviously be used for other purposes, but work well to bring focused illumination to the walls of your property.

The Kichler Design Pro LED collection has three ranges of models in the outdoor wall lighting space and in each range, the models come in either a 10 degree coverage spotlight form, or in 35 degree or 60 degree floodlights making a total of nine lights altogether.

The 15731 (10 degree), 15732 (35 degree) and 15733 (60 degree) are equivalent to a normal 20Watt MR-16 bulb.

The other two ranges work the same for numbering but go up in power. So, the 15741,15742 and 15743 are equivalent to a 35Watt MR-16 and the top-of-the-range 15751,15752 and 15753 provide the same illumination as a 50Watt MR-16.

All of these lights can be fitted with cowls to shade light-spill from other parts of your garden.

Surface lighting

The second way to provide very specific outdoor wall lighting is to use attached or inset lights to give very localized illumination. Kichler make two different types of wall or post lights.

The first is made in a bronze antique effect and there are 2 lights in this group: the LED Vintage Park (15750 TZT) and the LED Decorative Hammered Roof (15763 TZT). Both of these would be suitable for a more decorative exterior.

The other kind is much more functional and modern in appearance. The LED Mini Deck Light (15765) is a classic half-cone shape that comes in the usual bronze (AZT) or black (BKT) finishes as well as two new ones, white (WHT) or beach (BE) which is a kind of sand effect. The other modern light is the LED Half Moon (15764) which is a hemisphere with a downwards facing cutout for the light and is available in a bronze or brass finish.

All of these lights are surface-mounted and this is not always what you will need for your outdoor wall lighting. This brings us on to our final group of lights, the inset lights.

These small lights are set back into the surface of your property and are particularly useful when you need some light for safety purposes. A classic position for these would be on a set of steps, where a surface mounted light would be more of a hazard than having no light at all.

Kichler can supply two forms of inset light.

The first is a brick mounted wall light, the LED Wall Light and is available with (15773 AZT) or without (15774 AZT) a louvre on the front. The second form is available as two kinds of step light, either the LED Acrylic Lens Step Light (15780 AZT) or the LED Louvred Face Step Light (15782 AZT or WHT) and these throw a low even light down onto the step.

When combined together, all these forms of outdoor wall lighting can provide both beauty and safety for your home.

Some ideas for planning your outdoor garden lighting scheme using Kichler landscape lighting kits.

A Little Outdoor Garden Lighting Design

Outdoor garden lighting can make an astonishing amount of difference to the look of your property after dark.

Of course it is tempting sometimes to think of outdoor garden lighting as just a purely functional thing – a way for us to avoid tripping up if we have to go out late at night, but there is a charm to seeing a place lit well after dark that most of us are still facinated by.

Think back to famous places you’ve visited, where you saw the location both in the day time and by night (or maybe bought the postcard!). The night-time image is invariably more dramatic – even for places like the Trevi fountain in Rome which is dramatic enough even in daylight!

Now, there is no suggestion that you should try to light your house in the same way as an ancient monument. However, simple accenting of some of the features of your property can make a huge difference in how it looks.

Using Outdoor Garden Lighting for Dramatic Effect

Don’t be tempted to just bathe the whole property in light. Pick out small areas or features for the most dramatic effect.

So, for example, do you have a large or unusually-shaped tree? Perhaps uplighting would bring out the strength or shape. Maybe you have an area of planting that becomes a single blob in the darkness? Simple highlighting will bring back the color and shape to your plants. Statues are an obvious target for some illumination after dark, but stay with a more subtle approach to achieve the best effect.

When you have thought through all of the highlight areas in your garden, you should also have a think about how people will get around it in the dark. Using a different kind of outdoor garden lighting kit, you can set up path lighting to guide them along any paths you have and in a similar way, you may want to set up more general lights to provide illumination around a pool or patio.

By taking these simple steps, you can plan out scheme which will make an enormous difference to the look of your home and of course no matter what you finally decide upon, there is likely to be a Kichler led landscape lighting kit to help you with your outdoor garden lighting.

Follow these simple instructions to avoid most common Kichler outdoor lighting problems.

Basic Safety Considerations for Outdoor Lighting Problems

Like all things that carry electric current, you need to be sure that you are confident with handling basic wiring techniques before installing Kichler outdoor lighting yourself and trying to handle any outdoor lighting problems. If, at any time, you are unhappy with these procedures, then do seek professional help from an electrician – especially in some places like the UK where this is now actually a legal requirement.

Having said that, it is not hard to get this kind of installation done with relative ease and by following these simple instructions you should be able to avoid any major Kichler outdoor lighting problems.

Outdoor Lighting Problems From Inadequate Voltage

First, calculate what number of watts you are going to require to drive your lights. Do this by summing the wattage for all the lights you intend to install on this segment of wire.

Choose transformers which can meet the demands of the overall wattage. Actually, you should invest in one with a lot more total power capacity than you really need right now, to cover future requirements. For safety’s sake you also need to make sure that you don’t go too far the other way. As a guideline, don’t use a transformer with more than double your requirements for power.

Next, estimate how much wire you’ll will need and work out the guage you need. For a scheme over 200 watts, use 12-gauge. For a scheme below that amount, you should aim to use 14-gauge cable (the wire gets smaller as the numbers go up and so can carry less curent safely – more dangerous outdoor lighting problems could be caused by the wire overheating).

It is possible to use timers to control your lights or set up lights that are controlled by the amount of day light available, so they come on as it gets dark. Or, of course, you could use a simple on/off switch.

Installing the Landscape Lights

Decide where to place your transformer. If it is going to be located outdoors, it must be at least one foot away from the ground for safety purposes. The wall of your house is a perfectly acceptable place to put it.

Now run the first section of cable across to the transformer, and then using wire strippers strip approximately half an inch of the plastic insulation. Connect the stripped cables following the information that came with the transformer.

Place all your lighting out at the spots you’ve planned. Fine-tune as needed for the effect you want to achieve.

Now roll out all your cable to every single light. Leave a little spare loop of cable at every single light for attaching it.

Protect your cable with attractive pebbles or leaves and other ground cover or disguise it under vegetation. As an alternative, excavate shallow trenches. This is an ideal way to avoid outdoor lighting problems caused by more physical events, such as being caught by an unwary foot! A grass edger is the ideal tool for this, mainly because it cuts down to just the right level. As you bury it, make sure to hold the loop of cable above the surface of the ground.

In order to fix the cable to the lights, slide the connector halves onto the cable loop, and then push together until eventually they click on. If you have hooked up the transformer, the lamp ought to illuminate. If it doesn’t, take off the connectors and repeat the process.

Install all of the other lights in the same manner. In this way you should be able to get rid of almost all common outdoor lighting problems.

Kichler outdoor garden lighting to increase visibility and safety by lighting garden paths.

If you are looking for a Kichler landscape lighting kit to provide outdoor garden lighting, you will need to check out the Path and Spread models from the Kichler range.

These outdoor path lights give a broad spread of light, usually directed straight down, but there are several models in this range that are more like post lights that give a wider pool of light.

In fact, the Kichler path and spread range now contains over 100 individual lights that come in the normal Kichler selections of finish – either textured black or an architectural bronze.

The low-voltage 12V range contains several LED path lights, in particular the Kichler 15815 is a path light with a side post to give a more controlled directional light and the Kichler 15826 is a center-mounted path light that gives a much bigger light spread. In most cases, there is an equivalent incandescent light in the range (usually with a 3 in the model number instead of the 8 – so, for example, the 15326).

More traditional Kichler landscape lighting solutions also contain a range of 120V lights. This is slightly less comprehensive than the 12V set, with only 15 models in the latest Kichler range and obviously suffers from some of the disadvantages of standard voltage lights examined in the article on using low voltage landscape lights.

Outdoor wall lighting is handled by the Kichler Design Pro LED wall wash.

The Kichler outdoor lighting range has grown considerably recently with the addition of several new models to the Kichler Design Pro LED collection. Amongst these recent additions is a new wall wash light, picking up from the older models but moving to the new LED platform.

These outdoor wall lights can be used for several applications, not just for illuminating walls. They provide an even light spread that can be used to bring accent light to shrubs and plants as well as throwing architectural details into silhouette.

There are two models of outdoor wall lights provided by Kichler. Although the housing in each case is made of aluminium, they are supplied with different textured finishes. The Kichler 15861 AZT has an architectural bronze appearance, while the Kichler 15861 BKT comes in a plain textured black finish so that you can choose which will match your exisiting décor.

Both of these exterior light fixtures are floor mounted with an adjustable head to point the light up at the angle you desire and come with an 8-inch mounting stake included. If you want to use an alternative mounting method, you can optionally buy a separate mounting flange and bracket.

Why Use Low Voltage Landscape Lights?

Low voltage landscape lights have been used for many years to give accent and form to outdoor lighting schemes. Often used to highlight paths or to light features, they give an enormous number of options to the landscape lighting designer.

One of the biggest benefits to low voltage lighting is that it is inherently safer than lights that use mains voltages, particularly when the long runs of cabling needed are taken into account. This cabling has to cope with weather conditions and other hazards beyond that of normal house wiring and this all makes accidents far more possible. Knowing that there is only a low voltage in the circuit removes the worry of using exterior cabling completely.

Low voltage landscape lights are usually more compact than their full voltage equivalents and this helps to focus the designer’s mind on the effect desired from the lighting without the worry of having to conceal more bulky lighting units.

Setting Up Low Voltage Landscape Lights

If you are going to use low voltage landscape lights, you will need a step-down lighting transformer to bring your normal supply voltage down to 12V for the lighting circuit. This needs to match the voltage in the country where you live, so primarily 110V for the US and 220-240V for a lot of Europe. If you are unsure about this step, consult a qualified electrician, as choosing the wrong transformer could be an expensive mistake.

Kichler low voltage landscape lights in this space are based on the Design Pro LED series of products as detailed in the information on LED landscape lighting.

Exploring the Kichler Design Pro series for LED landscape lighting.

A new generation of outdoor lighting promises to provide greater illumination at lower voltages and energy usage: LED landscape lighting is gradually taking over from more traditional bulb technologies because of its flexibility and the savings it can provide. We’ll take a look at the technology behind this approach before looking at specific Kichler landscape lighting kits with LEDs.

The main LED Landscape Lighting Problem.

The problem in the past has been that led landscape lighting has just not been able to put out a comparable amount of light to normal incandescent bulbs and that what little light it produced was distinctly blue in color. The output color of the bulb is known as its color temperature, the blue end of the scale being known as cool colors and the yellow end as warm colors.

Engineers have been working for some years in the led landscape lighting space to bring the output back into a range that is more pleasing to the eye and are starting to see results that make an LED based landscape lighting solution more feasible.

LED Landscape Lighting output.

The problem with light output from LED lighting is another matter. Light output is measured in something called Lumens and is very hard to compare directly between different lighting types, mainly because LED manufacturers have been quite cautious of publishing directly comparable figures until recently.

We are finally starting to see comparable LED lumen output to that given out by standard bulbs and so this is a problem that will ease over time. Some manufacturers are getting round the problem in the meantime by producing multi-element bulbs where the combined output of several LED elements add up to give the right output light. Where newer units are involved, the power consumption for a similar lumen output to an incandescent bulb is significantly reduced in comparison. So for example, a 60W bulb equivalent can use as little as 10W in the new LED format.

The Kichler landscape lighting line-up includes several LED lighting offerings. The Kichler Design Pro LED range covers pretty much every lighting situation in a series of 12V low-voltage lighting packages. In the range are fittings for accent lighting, deck and patio lighting and also fittings for patch and spread lighting use. These have a slightly wider angle of spread for the lighting situation requirements. Also in this range is the Design Pro Water Accent kit for lighting your water features. Kichler warn that these are not for use in pools or spas.

When buying these LED landscape lighting kits, you need to be aware that they also require a separate LED driver module. The Kichler Design Pro range supports a wide range of voltages from 9V-15V which makes it easier to get a working voltage at each of the lights on your cable without having to provide separate wiring to each one. In normal usage, each bulb along a cable will “see” less and less voltage as a result of all those before it on the cable. This is known as voltage-drop and it can make it very hard to get an operating light at the end of a long run. The Kichler LED landscape lighting solution allows you to set a slightly higher voltage at the driver and still have enough left at the far end to make the 9V needed to fire the last bulb.
